Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation have closed the canoe halau along Hilo Bayfront Beach Park, plus Moku Ola (Coconut Island) and all beach parks along Kalanianaole Avenue in Keaukaha because of high surf, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Beach park closures include all beaches between Reed’s Bay Beach Park and Richardson Ocean Park.
Hilo Bayfront Highway remains closed. State Highways and Public Works crews are erecting additional barricades and the public is asked to stay away from shoreline areas for safety reasons.
The closures will remain in place until the high surf subsides.
A high surf warning remains in effect for shorelines in Windward Kohala, Hamakua, North and South Hilo and Puna until 6 p.m. Thursday. The highest and most dangerous surf will be at high tides at approximately 6 p.m. tonight and 5:45 a.m. Thursday, according to Civil Defense.
